Some CMU Samples...
From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.
Since there was some interest in this, here is a Live project that contains the following:
1. Drum Rack containing all the CMU-800R drum sounds.
2. Sampler containing a multi-sampled version of the “Melody” voice of the CMU-800R. Note that the “Melody” voice and the “Chord” voice are exactly the same. The “Melody” one has a bit more extensive enveloping on it, so I just sampled that one.
3. Sampler containing a multi-sampled version of the CMU “Bass” voice. This voice is slightly different, inasmuch as it has a Sallen-Key LPF on it, and a slightly different envelope. The oscillator source is the same, though.
If you don’t have Live, or have Live but don’t have Sampler, you can still dig the recordings out of the appropriate folder and make a multi-sampled instrument in your sampler of choice. These were recorded, like all my samples, through Purple BizMk mic pres in to the Mytek 8x192. Any noise you hear is a result of the device being sampled.
And finally, here is a Groove Template for Live made from the CMU-800R’s sequencer. It is a one measure 16th note groove template, and definitely gives any cut the loping feel of the CMU-800R software sequencer. This is, of course, worthless in any other software; it’ll only work in Live.
In any event, this should put to rest any lingering Interweb Bullshit that the CMU-800R is a 606 + 303 + four 101s, or whatever other nonsense people are spouting. It is more like a DR-55 + 5 totally unfiltered voices from a Juno 106 + some bass sound I can’t even think of a simile for.
