Hands, With Occasional Beard...

In order to do the overview video for our Proton module, I needed to multi-track and clear a patch I've been playing with for the last couple days. Before I did that, I thought I'd do a quick live performance video of the patch, which you can watch above.

I'm using the four track cassette deck for the noise beds; there are three ambience loops I recorded in various places (Mexico pyramid ambience, Berlin U-Bahn, and the O'Hare airport), plus a fourth track that is a pad. The 4-track I have only has stereo outs, so I have the first track as FX send 2, going to the H9 Max. The second and third tracks go straight to the modular out the main outs, and the fourth track, the pad, goes straight to the modular out FX send 1. In this way, I have direct outs of all four tracks from a deck that doesn't have direct.

The pad is running to a Kompressor module, where I introduce the sidechain pulse, and then to Dimensions to get stereo-fied. The high hat and sidechain pulse are sequenced by the monome/White Whale. The kick, snare, and Boop sound are sequenced by the second Sequencer 1. All are Audio Damage modules. The bass is the WMD/SSF voice, sequenced by the first Sequencer 1. Recorded as a stereo pair straight to Adobe Audition. I used iZotope Ozone 7 for a mild mastering squish, but otherwise, WYSIWYG.

A couple people have asked me to do some more basic videos, so I thought I'd give that a whirl. This one is a quick-ish demonstration of using external effects and modules in a Live session, and the hidden gotchas of same.

Musical Stylings...

Although I don't actually make music to pay the rent any more (and thank all the various Gods and wildland færies and whatever for that!) it is still rather important to my personal well-being and understanding of the world to keep my feet wet. I find people that make gear but don't release records to be, well, you know.

To that end, I recorded a full EP, or more of an extended EP, or maybe a short stack LP... eh, fuck it... a pile of songs for Detroit Underground™, which will be released shortly, with remixes from Basek and Proem. I'll talk about that more when it's out.

In the meantime, I have merrily continued to make tracks, like I do. So these two tracks, while being "put out" before the DU™ release, were in fact recorded after it was done. In both cases, everything went through the Euro. If you have any specific questions about a part, I'll be happy to answer to the best of my abilities. But suffice to say both were done with my normal techniques, which I've talked about at length on the AI YouTube channel.

Sound Experiments 001 - DIY Noise Box...

Just a fun little Saturday afternoon project. My only comment not covered in the video is that, like all piezo-based projects, you need an amplifier of some sort to bring it up to modular levels. I use a Circuit Abbey Axis module, but any preamp will do. The Music Thing Mikrophonie is probably the best tool for this job, and handy to have in any case.

Yo Dawg I Herd U Like Random, So I Randomed Ur Random: Tech Time 008

To do this video, I went through a bunch of the techniques I use in normal production to add indeterminism to tracks over the course of a couple days. I then sat down to edit it and realized I had over an hour of footage, and I didn't even cover most of the non-Live apps I use, nor hardware.

Randomization is a fucking broad topic.

Anyhow, I managed to knock it down to three techniques. Again, I'll raise this issue that has appeared a few times as I've done these: I'm not entirely sure what's worth filming. A lot of this shit is self-evident to me, so I'm not sure what people find interesting or not.

Anyhow, here you go: some thoughts on Randomization. Necessarily Live-centric.
