Here's Something You Don't See Every Day...
Post Comment

Now, I don't particularly care for the song itself, which is pretty thin. And she's obviously nervous as hell, being her first time on TV and all. But there are some interesting things about this performance that are worth noting. Chief among these is that this is an actual girl, that can actually sing and dance, performing an actual song, with an actual band that can actually play.

It's really sad that this is worth noting, since this was the norm not so very long ago. But when you've received a decade-long barrage of nasal-voiced scale princesses with backing tracks and indie rock shoe-gazes that look down on any aspect of virtuosity and performance in favor of some hazy concept of "independence," this is really quite a relief.

So, apparently Sean Combs has decided to save us from ourselves. Well, more power to him, I say.

Wow, killer. I might actually buy the CD. Wouldn't it be great if horn sections came back in style? And live drummers? Or maybe I should just retreat to my TOP and EWF records...

I've been thinking for a while that the stage is set for someone kick-ass to completely take over the music scene. The early 80s scene was pretty lame then Michael Jackson came in and killed it. Same with Nirvana in the 90s.

People are tossing around words like "Prince" and "George Clinton" and "Stevie Wonder" with this woman. Revered R&B eccentric geniuses. I wish people would be slower to leap right to that kind of hyperbole --- it's a real turnoff to me and it immediately puts me in a folded-arm cynic mode, which is not the desired effect. And I must remind everyone that similar associations were draped over Terrence Trent D'Arby's shoulders.

That being said, I'm TREMENDOUSLY encouraged that the industry is excited about an inspired musical kook who is a young black woman. A young black woman who seems to be skating left of stereotypes. This truly could not make me happier.

So I'm on her side. I will buy the record. I will hope for the best.

As an addendum to this, I will say "hazy concept of 'independence'" is too kind. The self-congraulating indie-rock hacks you're referring to don't have a concept, hazy or otherwise, and they don't aspire to or cherish independence.

Yup, Chad is spot on. I pointedly didn't say "THE NEXT COMING OF EITHER JESUS CHRIST OR OTIS REDDING: YOU DECIDE!!!" Girl got skill, no mistake, but in a world where all this has already been done, and by people with much better songwriters behind them, this is nice and all, but it is fairly derivative. But hell, she's on fucking Letterman doing her thing, so what the fuck do we know?

But like I said, it's sad that something like this, which would be a one-hit-wonder in 1965, is such a relief to see nowadays. This chick is great and all, but she couldn't carry Carla Thomas' garment bag. R&B being what it is (very lemming-like), we'll hopefully see a whole crop of Stax/Volt/Motown/Atco ripoffs in the next couple years. Now, _that_ is something I can get behind.

i bought this record the day it came out due to having seen the video for "tightrope" a few months ago. i must say, it's enjoyed nearly continuous rotation since that day - every song is like a different world, including an 8:30 minute last track (that doesn't get boring!). i'm not usually into "pop" music, but this is just great music, well played, well sung (with VERY little hint of tuning).

give me hope...

@bleen To be clear: I'm excited. I like it when music elicits this kind of response in people. Thanks for the recommendation. Will definitely check it out.

i saw them open for Jamie Lidell a couple years ago. they were pretty good and had an "early prince meets Queen" epic rock vibe and threw out some really heavy guitar riffs and epic solos but would transition into the kind of funk thing pretty seemlessly. it was enjoyable live.. and after their set they appeared on the dance floor w/everyone else to enjoy Jamie LIdell's set.. who also has a band that can play and tour and all those wonderful things.. but of course. .Jamie Lidell does his thing.. sampling the band as they play then one by one the band members would put down their instruments and walk off stage and he would go into a nice dubby techno freak out for 20 minutes or so which is what shines most about his live sets to me..

anyway - it's funny but i saw that Justin Bieber kid on letterman some time ago and my first thought was.. "he's singing.. and there's a live element to the music.. but he's singing!" then i had to drink 64 ounces of water to stave off the saccharin over dose that leads to dehydration when hearing such bubblegum pop music.

In my ideal life, I play in a band that has a tight, tight horn section.

"People are tossing around words like "Prince" and "George Clinton" and "Stevie Wonder" with this woman"

and rightly so, this women is a genius. The archandroid is a brilliant, BRILLIANT album. And yeah, she can sing like a motherfucker. Problem is, do any of the above artists fit into the mainstream these days? not really but... it almost doesn't matter. The arcandroid is damn near an innovation in and of itself as a body of work. I highly suggest any musician wishing to expand their horizons to pick it up. and, her previous work.

Brass section back in vogue? I surely hope so, being a sax player and all.

btw, Diane Birch had a great band on SNL with three bone players.

Not saying I care much for either of them but seing great players play live on TV again can't be a bad sign.

A little too much of the James Brown moves for me. It's a hot band, and I'm super happy to see some real R&B/Funk come back - The Heavy comes to mind. So generally, it's a good thing for sure. And YES more horn sections please!
