Interesting that Charlie Rouse isn't on this one, which is a German TV appearance from '63. Maybe he was in the bathroom or something. Man, I love this track, though. So harmonically interesting, and no matter what bizarro collections of notes Monk was calling "chords" that week got hammered out, the root melody still manages to climb through and get stuck in your hindbrain. I wonder where I could get me one of those hats.

A really inventive pop musician. That's how I see him.

One of the first jazz musicians my dad introduced me to when I was a kid. This might be me being nostalgic/rose-colored-glasses, but I think I liked it because you could tell that Thelonious was really a kid at heart. There's always that quality to his stuff that... he's just playing with colored blocks. Y'know?

Killer share, Chris. Killer share. Thanks.

hehe, you will hate me for that one: link [soundcloud.com]

I first tried to do it on ukelele, but that was too hard, so I did it on ableton live.

This is just genius, it must be a father / son thing, since my dad also showed this to me when I was a wee lad.
And low and behold, my 6 year old son just watched this while laughing his ass off, totally loving it.

if you like monk's chords and you don't know ran blake, he's worth checking out

Mighty and tasteful. Abstract and tuneful. Such a great era for art in general.

'round midnight always puts a smile on my face, and to hear Monk play it means even if I can never convince Joe Bonner to play it, I'll still have lived a full life.

Thanks for spreading the joy!
