A Little Grease For Your Thursday...

From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

A friend of mine took me to a taco joint in Tijuana once, and when I left the place I was a little sad because I knew that I would never again, in my entire existence on this mortal coil, have a taco as good as the ones I’d just eaten. This song is the rock equivalent of that experience. This is rock music stripped down to its absolute bare essence, with no production, no virtuosity, no lights, no dancers, and no histrionics. Gives one pause to think about all the ridiculous things that we lesser beings do to compensate for lack of shear unadulterated skill.

But the dancers.... it would be a rain dance. Very authentic, Mr Waits.

    Also: sheer.

Actually if you listen very closely about the 2-minute mark you can hear that they're using Autotune.

I kid, I kid. Put down the sharp objects.

Fantastic performance as usual by Tom Waits, but the band do a good job too. I'd never really listened to the Blues Explosion before but I might have to check them out.

Good stuff. I'm totally with you putting virtuosity on the list of things people use to compensate for lack of pure skill.

I once tried turning a friend of mine on to Tom Waits by handing him a copy of Blood Money, and saying, "Look at how ugly this guy is. He obviously hasn't gotten by on his good looks. He has to be talented if he can last twenty years in the music industry looking like that."
