PulseModulator...
From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.
If you want to go hit the freebies page in the AD store, you can grab a copy of PulseModulator, the plug-in we made for Computer Music magazine’s cover disk about three years ago.
It is a fairly odd plug-in, I’ll be honest. It is a semi-model of this pedal, an optical tremolo Electro-Harmonix put out in the 70s. Three LFOs drive a single VCA, resulting in some quite strange waveshapes. We gave it tempo sync because, well, why not?
Anyhow, a lot of people that don’t have access to Computer Music magazine have been asking for this lately, so we decided to go ahead and just add it to the store as a freebie. We’ll make a new CM exclusive shortly.
As an aside, this plug-in is what led to the original BigSeq, if you were curious. I made one using the same LFO structure but with a filter instead of a VCA, but I could never get it to work right. I then re-did the architecture to just have a gate sequencer, and then I got the filter bit working. I stuck ’em together and BigSeq was born. I did all this while Adam was doing the hard parts of Phase Two.

And yet, I bought that stupid mag just for that plugin, keep a copy of the OSX component squirrelled away in my gmail in case of hard drive apocalypse, and generally love it a lot. ;) But you're right, it's weird.
Heh sweet. People sometimes forget how effective tremolo/gating can be. As an effect it has the advantage of REMOVING something, instead of adding something. It can change the character of your music with doing what most effects do, which is contribute to your track becoming muddy with overlapping harmonic peaks, phase cancellation and general sonic overload.
As a side note, we got my son a MoogerFooger ring modulator for a christmas gift, and he ends up using it mostly as a tremolo.
As a further side note -- I've been messing a lot with BigSeq2, using it as a tempo-synced enveloped gate. I use it to process my EMS Putney, which is great at making crazy noises but difficult to keep in sync with anything else.
BigSeq2 is fine in this capacity, but what I'd love is a VST plug in that uses an envelope I can trigger with MIDI to gate incoming audio. So I could program patterns in Ableton, feed them to the plugin to gate incoming audio. Anyone know of such?
@chaircrusher - you could use a sidechained gate in ableton... trigger it with a rimshot sample loaded in simpler/impulse. it's just an attack/hold/envelope, but you could probably get some mileage out of it.
hey chaircrusher, I just emailed you a Windows VST that does exactly that. I made it a long time ago in SynthEdit because I couldn't find anything like it.
I've never used Live, but in Tracktion I either drop it on a track and assign the MIDI input to that track (to gate recorded audio) or set up an audio send to the plug + MIDI input track (for live audio).
hope it's what you're looking for.
except the email just bounced back. drop me a line at krylenko AT rocketmail DOT com if you want it.
Nice one Chris.
Only had 3 minutes playing with it so far, and I can immediately see some great uses for it. It is one of those you don't use everyday, but are glad to have in the arsenal.
Thanks!
A very useful plugin! Splendid on pads and guitar. I often reach for this one when I'm thinking, "This needs something...."
I find I use my moogerfooger ringmod for tremolo at low LFO speeds and for a distortion-like effect at very high LFOs. I rarely use it for ringmod but that's all part of the fun with the foogers.
I'll have to play w/ pulse modulator again, been a while. I do rather like the old AD UIs but as CR has said before they just don't work for anything with more than a few knobs. Pity...
Not sure why I like it so much, but that Pulse Modulator logo is full of win...
I swear I saw an AI flter somewhere.
It be this
