Dear Lazyweb...
Post Comment
Okay, you might remember the World's Most Expensive CS5 from previous posts. It is actually nearing completion. It has wooden end-pieces and MIDI input now, and the ridiculous sliding pot that acts as a pitchbend has been replaced with a DSI self-centering wheel which will, of course, be back-lit. (That really goes without saying, doesn't it?)

Here's the thing, though. Stephen at Synthwood had to cannibalize his own CS15 for parts to make it work, and we can't have that. So, Lazyweb, I'm asking you for help. The three ICs we're looking for:

iG00156 (VCF)
TA7179 (regulator)
YM24800 (50 pin custom 'key assigner')

Now, just to pre-empt some needless typing, Senso (who are the normal suppliers of parts of this sort, and also have a page as Vintageplanet.nl) don't have these. Neither, obviously, does Yamaha. However, there are tens of thousands of these CS-series synths out there in the world, and I'm certain that one of you is aware of one that could be used for parts. Alternately, perhaps you've already parted one out and have the keyboard scanner and/or VCF left?

I know I should have given up on this little guy long ago, as there's really a limit of what you can realistically expect to expend, effort-wise, on a single-osc monosynth before you start to look suspiciously like Don Quixote, but I've decided that this busted-ass CS-5 Shall Not Go To The Dump. Not now, not ever. It is only two ICs away from the holy land. Help a brother out.

EDIT: We've found sources for all the parts. Thanks for the help! (Especially the Korean place. Expensive, but they have everything.) This CS-5 will cost, when all is said and done, about the same as your average Juno 60 or Mono/Poly. Despite its lowly stature, I plan to use it on every track I make until I feel I've got my money's worth.

I can't help you on the CS5, but I can add to the Radiophonic Workshop news. And yes, I'm sure that over half of you have already read this article, but for those that haven't: link [www.soundonsound.com]

This is probably going to be needless typing too, but some South Korean shop seems to have those VCFs according to their pages and they have international shipping too:

Also, since TA7179 is just a voltage regulator, there probably are some viable similar / identical substitutions if that one can't be found.

Oh, Vintageplanet DOES have TA7179P on their list, unless they have just sold out and haven't updated it.

Seems like the following ones are equivalent +-15V regs of the same vintage: MC1468L, SG4501J, ECG921, LTC921

Yeah, we got one from Senso but it was hideously expensive. We still need one, though.

Stephen @ synthwood rescued my sad sad P5. I owe him bigtime.

I know this is no help to you, but your CS-5 silliness is making me feel much better about the silly things I want to do to my Korg Delta.

It's Save A Synth Year. Take that pile of broken keys and dirty pots and turn it in to a work of art. Mod it, pimp it, love it.

I have prodded mine to discover the +15 rail is at -2, but if I replace the power regulators and it's still hosed I'll be glad to send the boards your way.

Sounds like a Matrix post. . . and we were all just thinking how well you had differentiated yourself.
