Weekend Challenge...
Post Comment
We're having one of those rare hot flashes here in Oregon as the Willamette Valley goes through what one can only assume is menopause. Since my office (like every other private space in this state) is un-air-conditioned, I can only remain in here for 10 minutes at a time, largely because it's about 135. (I wish I was exaggerating that figure.) This gave me an idea for a challenge.

This weekend, write, record, and mix a song in 10 minutes, from bare empty tracks to finished. (Rendering time doesn't need to be counted.) Post links to your tracks here, and I'll pick five and have a poll on Monday when it is cool again. The winner will receive a copy of Automaton when it is released. Obviously, we wouldn't expect A Day In The Life or anything of that sophistication, but it would be interesting to see what can occur in such a short span of time in the various genres to which the readership of this blog ascribes.

Comments:
Yes, that was quite fun. In fact, I had so much fun with the first that I promptly decided to record another! Of course, since I was rapidly running out of steam I mis-rendered the first attempt and didn't even record the second into the arrange in Live!
Fortunately, I decided to record screencasts of the process, so I took the audio recordings from there - warts/system volume increases and all. Looking back, the videos show that I probably came in just over 10 minutes in both attempts if you're being technical - but it's all documented. :)

I did one as well, and recorded the process on stickam, waiting for the vid to be rendered. The vid is funnily just 9:59 long. Here is the recording: link [bl0rg.net] I really wish I'd had more time, and also it's the second time ever I use the monomachine, so it all sounds a bit uncontrolled. Anyway, here we go. I also notice my quick techno skillz were perfect for that contest. I often lose patterns or stuff when I have to play live so I end up making a lot of "tracks" in a hurry for the evening.

Wow, that was fast... I had no time to mix and actually went 11 minutes.

Here's one called Ten Minute Song. It only took 9 minutes.

In the interest of time, I basically copied the same melody to different instruments, timeshifted, muted stuff. Enjoy, JBV

Software: Logic Express, Ricochet, TAL-dub2, lots of presets and option drag. :)

Wow, lots of fun, but also incredibly frustrating. 10 minutes is NOT a lot of time (at least for me).

Built in Reason, using drum loops and presets for the most part (no time to program Thor....), but it's got that Moogish nastiness that everybody loves.

Wish I could have used an AD plugin, but the Logic workflow takes more time.

I too now realise just how short 10mins is when you're having fun...

Here's my entry:

I overran by 90seconds, which I spent splaying it out over 32bars..

I'm not sure if it's even worth specifying a genre for something with 8 channels...

I might have another go at this... see if I can get more channels in faster... I might even figure out how to use Logic8 by the time I'm done :o

Now I really feel proud.
I figured out how to assign something to the right mousebutton in Logic8, and that bought me enough extra time to finish right on the button AND get a DubStation and a Reverence in there.

This is a frickin great exercise!

Here's the 2nd attempt.

Shit... if I keep on for another hour I'll have 6 grooves to play with! :D

More people need to join in with this.
