LensBaby...
Post Comment
MonoMachine and MachineDrum

In the near future (possibly the next couple hours) I'll put up a thoughtful post on some aspect of the music industry and we can all argue and laugh and cry and ban people and stuff. But in the interim, I'll mention that I got my LensBaby 3G lens today for my Nikon. I was wondering how the camera work in the Buchla Music Easel film that was making the rounds lately was done, and thanks to a hint from the kindly Professor Kirn in this post on CDM, we learn that a LensBaby 3G was used. Since I'm a big fan of little depth-of-field, I determined this was Exactly What I Needed, and furthermore Deductable (by virtue of posting the pictures that result in this very blog.)

Moog Source - LensBaby

So, yes, that's my MonoMachine and MachineDrum up top, and here's my oft-used Source, all arty and shit. Thanks, and I'll just add that receipt to the stack. Now back to our regularly scheduled program. (Or you can hit my Flickr page for new pictures of the synth community's most famous cat, Pablo, also done with the LensBaby, because he's patient like that.)

Hmm, Lensbaby - i thought about getting one for quite a while. It's just amazing to explore the world through one of those.

However it's gotta wait - PS3 first ;) Good pics, Chris!

CR - what sort of Nikon do you have? I have a D40, and I had been considering picking up either a LensBaby or an old-ass (1960's/70's) manual Nikon lens...presuming that you have something similar, is the LB3G easy to use? Are you just setting the shutter speed and letting the camera do the aperture work? (And, yes, I know this isn't a photography blog...but taking pictures is all the creativity I have time for these days...)

also: me likey little-depth-of-field too...

I dunno... not to fond of the samples on their webpage- a bit too overly blurred and smudged. And a little unnatural compared with macro/tele lenses. At least with Photoshop you can control the area and blur.

I like the Elektron shot though.

JG, I have a D40 as well. The problem (or "opportunity," as the case may be) with using the LensBaby in particular, or older lenses in general, is that you don't get the TTL metering. I find that a lot of people used to digitals (myself included) don't necessarily have the grasp of the fundamental connection between shutter speed, ISO, and aperture necessary to make this sort of picture taking easy. I find myself taking 3 or 4 shots of any given subject, rather than the 1 or 2 I would with TTL. I don't generally use autofocus, or auto anything for that matter, but I do like my meter.

Jaysen, yeah, they ham it up a bit on their website, but basically all the Lensbaby is is a bellows set for an SLR camera, which makes it work just like any other camera with bellows. Simple fact: the smaller the aperture the bigger the depth of field. The LensBaby has a very mechanical method for setting the aperture which must be seen to be believed, involving a stack of metal rings and a magnet; the device included with the lens for doing so, and the method in which it is done, quite literally stumped me cold. The pictures on their sample page were uniformly taken with gigantic aperture settings in order to exaggerate the effect.

If you search the tag "Lensbaby" on Flickr, you'll find much better examples. But you're right inasmuch as this is a gimmick lens (like a fisheye or some such) and not something for more general use.

The Lensbaby 3G is like Dr. Device for your camera.

Sure, you can get similar effects in other ways, but you'll waste a lot of time, won't have as much fun, and won't look as cool doing it.
