Amazing. Wonder where he'll end up.

That video is quite old. He's 21 now, and a pretty well-known drummer.

If you have aptitude, and have Dennis Chambers as your teacher, you'll do pretty well in life, drum-wise.

Please don't make me listen to any more drum solos. Please.

Foolishly following the link to his homepage will take you to a world of jazz funk fusion drum solos, where dry toms pan eternally around the stereo field, over DX-style 'notecluster' solo chirping and twittering.

Aaargh panned drums!
No, mr mix engineer I do not want to be situated in a position 1 foot above the drummers head. Why that weird mixing fashion remains prevalent I just don't know, separation can be acheived much more pleasantly.

Sorry, I just have a thing about panning techniques in general
No offence to Mr Royster.

I'm all with you there. My number one pet peeve is stereo micing a piano with the left mic over the bass strings and the right mic over the treble strings. I can't stand sampled piano because it's all like that. The only person that hears a piano like that, and even then not really, is the player. The audience hears a nice mixed stereo image reflecting off the soundboard.

But I can't stand panned drums in general. I tend to run all the mics right up the middle, and use a narrow stereo field for the overheads.

Yeah, drum solo... yawn. Double kick drum peddle... whatever. But, still, that's impressive. I think when I was 12 I was still struggling with a bar chord and hadn't moved beyond 4/4 time. And the kid has a good sense of dynamics, which is more than you can say about half the drummers out there.

Well, this guy has chops, no doubt about it...but does the world really need another Chester Thompson?

he's not even a guy. he's a kid.

But yeah, I agree, it's too bad every decent drummer in the world is eventually lost to jazz.

I don't usually dig drum solos but that kid has talent.
