Dear Lazyweb....

by Chris Randall

What's an NLE that runs on Windows, doesn't cost more than, say, $100, can import HD-res image stacks at 30fps and reformat them to 29.97 without fucking crashing, and isn't Vegas? (Those last two are unfortunately redundant.) A free backrub to the person that provides an answer that isn't stupid. If you don't know for a fact that the NLE can import stacks of JPEGs and re-stripe the time, the answer is de facto stupid, so don't bother typing it.

I should note at this point, to save the trouble of actually answering any of the comments in the previous thread, that I own Cleaner, so I can turn any format of actual video in to any other in fine form; I can even do several formats simultaneously. I don't need a compressor. I need something that can take a 3-camera set of HD-resolution JPEG stacks, re-stripe it to audio framerates, allow me to edit without a stupid script, and render it to a lossless codec. This should be a fairly simple operation, and in actual fact, Vegas should be able to do all these things. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, Vegas is a complete pile of shit that can't run for 45 seconds without a page fault.

The great irony of all this is that once I've actually managed to turn this pile of bits in to a video (or a different pile of bits), I'll be struck by the fact that it isn't really that impressive. More of a proof-of-concept than anything else. Or a proof that I don't know trig, more to the point.

EDIT: As it turns out, I know plenty of people in the video editing sub-category of the entertainment industry. In conversations with several of them today, they all basically said the same thing: "dude, you need to get yourself FCP and shut the fuck up." So, that's what I'll do. In the mean-time, I was able to do a rudimentary version of what the fuck I was attempting to pull off in iMovie HD, of all things. 'Tis rendering now, so I'll shut the fuck up and upload it, and thus be able to let my OCD turn to other tasks, like typing encouraging things in the Adium window while Adam sweats out the DSP for our next product. So the next post on here will theoretically be a video, then we can return to our regularly scheduled programming.

I probably shouldn't be responding since I don't really know what I'm talking about, but (there's always a but)...

I was thinking CS3 Extended might do something like this (I'm now thinking it doesn't) but that led me to VirtualDub:

Open source so it won't cost you anything to investigate. If you already know about this, sorry for stating the obvious. Good luck.

I did know about VDub. Unfortunately, it is like most FOSS software: a nice concept but about as fun to use as self dentistry. But, that said, VirtualDub is a dubber, not an NLE. Its main stock in trade is turning other shit in to AVIs. That's fine and all, but it isn't what I need.

With the qualifications you've put up there, I think you're shit out of luck if Vegas isn't working. I've yet to come across other program which fits the restrictions and works. Vegas crashing is curious, btw, since it works fine on all my computers.

Yeah, it has been rock solid for me for years (decades?) I've edited literally days of footage with it. This is definitely a New Thing.

NLE are rammed full of crap you're not going to need.. filters, effects, arcane node-based compositing etc. I've done several "live action" stop motion animation movies using just a digital camera and a copy of Flash. I'd import the 10 megapixel image stack as .png files.. pretty easy really. JPGs would work fine too. The max stage size in Flash is something like 2880x2880, theoretically good enough for an HD movie. The final movie can then be converted to an .flv directly with either Sorensen, On2 VP6 or MP4 encoding. If you or Elle already have Flash, that's a possibility.

I'd be happy just using Flash, After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator forever.

Most NLE products worth a damn still cost in the thousands, down from the price of an Audi just a few short years ago. For under a hundred bucks you're looking at open source. Not much there for windows or mac.. most post houses use Un*x boxes and there are more choices there.. Cinerella, LiVES, Kino to name a few.

I'm only bringing unix up because there's a linux live cd specifically for video editing called dyne:bolic. It's a live cd.. no installation required, however I think you have to copy the files to your drive and then boot from the cd, otherwise it does not affect your system in any way. It comes with Cinerella and LiVES. That's an option at least. I haven't tried it, but it's a pretty nice looking distro and it's optimized for video.

There's also a purebolic distro for audio with puredata, supercollider, csound etc.

For a hundred bills, your S.O.L. on windows me thinks. You could also take what you have already and try a better hosting service with higher bitrates and bigger file limits. Blip.tv, veoh.com and viddyou.com are three I know offhand.

Post houses have entire departments called "Conforming" for doing this shit. They're full of serious, anal retentive, muppets with OCD for technical specifications. A friend of mine did that for a while and did indeed want to shoot himself. He did get to chit-chat with Hollywood directors on the phone, but usually they were berating him for not delivering their dailies to their villa during Cannes.

AFAIK, QuickTime Pro can do this, it's $29.

QuickTime Pro is not an NLE.

Yeah, FCP is pretty much the best out there. Video always gives me hives, though. I have a bunch of friends who are expert in this crap and I still have trouble even with their help. "Oh, that's weird. It's reversing the fields. Open the video in this freeware thing and set your P/E to..." I just run away from anything to do with video now. Even iMovie and FCP have trouble reading each other's files sometimes.

Don't laugh, but my wife used Avid Free DV for years before getting her Mac and FCP. She used to swear a lot more, but video was actually edited and cut.
