Oh, you pretty thing...

by Chris Randall

Lexicon announced the PCM96 at AES today; there isn't a whole lot of information available, but their press release page has a couple PDFs to drool on, if you're a glutton for punishment. Essentially, it's a PCM91 with some extra mod shit from the '81 thrown in, as far as I can tell, in a sexy new box. (Plus the "return of the Concert Hall algorithm" that no one missed.) It seems that they can still manage to put out high-end stuff while they're merrily diluting their brand with USB-to-Xbox adapters or whatever the fuck they're putting out for the low end these days.

In any event, I've known something was in the works for a long time; it's nice to finally see it, and I think I can say with certainty that I'll be purchasing one. If I don't get a '91 first. No price announced, but I wager it'll be the same as the '91, $2K or so. One sorta-nifty feature is that it seems you can use it as a plugin if you have it connected via FW. I like that sort of shit, even though I have AES connections coming out my arse.

I know you're on Gearslutz Chris but here's some links:

Yeah, I read those threads. The only way those guys would be happy is if it was 500 format, only 30 were made, and it was $995. Obviously, none of those things are true, hence unhappy Slutz.

I have never heard the GearSlut mentality wrapped up so succinctly before. Kudos!

$2500, has programs from the 480, 960 and 224. I'm sure it will destroy the PCM91, but I didn't get to hear it yet.

It's worth noting that the 480 programs in the PCM91 don't sound anything like the 480. They're good and all, but "algorithms from" and "A/D/A hardware from" are very different things, as you no doubt know.

In any event, if I didn't need a Rosetta 800 so bad, this would be next on my List.

this kind of gear doesn't make sense to me anymore. it should just be a brick with a firewire cable coming out, run more than just algorithm 'verbs, and cost less. hmmm, i guess i'm talking about Duende lol.

Another thing I noticed on gearslutz is the furure retro XS
link [www.future-retro.co...]">link [www.future-retro.co...] It looks as if it might well be "foll of techno."

I'll wait for a few people to do the TC4000/PCM96/Bricasti/Altiverb Pepsi challenge before diving in.

Fuck Altiverb. Convolution reverb can bite my ass. If I want room sounds, I'll put the shit in a room, like an adult. And an IR of a 960 is like an MP3 of Miles Davis. The vibe is there, but it just doesn't sound right. But as for the other stuff, yeah.
