MFB : The Shit or just Shit?

by Chris Randall

I've been entertaining the thought of picking a couple MFB products up, specifically the Synth II pictured above and their new Drumcomputer, the MFB-503e. However, unlike the stuff I normally buy from boutique manufacturers, the look of these boxes doesn't exactly cause words like "robust" to go jangling about the cavern in between my ears.

So, how 'bout it? Do you own one of the many MFB products, and if so could you comment to build quality and sound? For the money, I'm not expecting the tank-like construction of Moog or Dave Smith stuff, as only Americans can do it, (although the Synth II costs more than an Evolver, I guess) but should I find myself concerned were these units to be used on stage?

Just for the record, MFB's site says that the Synth II has analog oscs, while the Synth Lite has DCOs. I don't know if this was always the case, but it seems pretty clear to me.

I now have a Synth II and really like it. For me personally, it's all about the interface - I never save sounds with it, because it's so quick to recreate anything. And the little internal sequencer is fun.
My impression is that you are a lot more picky about what things sound like, and less easily swayed by knob count. I think my Evolver sounds a lot better, but I use it less because I don't like the interface.
As a cheap, dirty-sounding synth which sounds good through guitar effects, I'm very happy with it.

When it comes to mfb, I recommend the Pianet.

not to derail the thread, but i've been weighing the synth II vs the [spectral audio] neptune II for a few weeks.

link [www.analoguehaven.co...]">link [www.analoguehaven.co...]

the neptune seems more "moog in a box", has a midi>cv converter and a multimode filter. it looks better as far as build quality, etc. the synth II has presets, though, which are nice.

thoughts?

If you haven't youtubed em, do it. A few vids of MFB stuff, beefy as fuck. I didnt find any of their drum stuff though, but for the kult and their other drum machine they DO have sound clips of em.
