Elle installed Google Analytics? for this site during her recent upgrade frenzy, and I've been amusing myself today by trying to sift useful information from the barage of data.

It's been running a month now, and there are some interesting things I've gleaned. For instance, there are more AI readers in L.A. than anywhere else in the world. Roughly 1/3 of all AI readers are on the West Coast of the USA, and of those, roughly half (so 1/6th of the total) are in L.A. The Oregon map shows some interesting data. For instance, there is an avid reader or two in Sheridan. For some reason, I find this fact somewhat disconcerting, as it is a town of some 3,000 people up in the Cascade range.

Although, when you think about it, the town AI is written in, Mill City, OR, makes Sheridan look like fuckin' Gotham. So there's that.

I'd also like to hear from the two people that regularly visit this site using SunOS. For some reason, I have it in my head that one of them lives in Sheridan. That'd be funny.

But other than that, the main thing I can glean from Google's analysis is that you all have much too much free time on your hands. Seriously. Make some music.

Holy crap, people in SHERIDAN? Does Sheridan even have, like, electricity? My family is all from there, but most of them left a long time ago and moved to places where we a) aren't related to everyone in town, and b) aren't dependent on farming.

I wonder if I'm related to your Sheridan readers. There's about a 50% chance.

Oh, wait. You said Sheridan has 3000 people? I wonder how much of that is the prison. Last I checked the population was closer to, like, 700.

In my experience Analytics is pretty good at discerning unique visitors and their entry methods from that old standby 'page views'. So the statistics aren't as skewed as you might think.

Chris, are you doing any ad-words related stuff with Analytics? If you consider buying any ad-words analytics makes it extremely easy to tune things since you can see your conversion rates.

You wife has a blog? Very cool, I just hope you all never want off the grid.

But about the free time issue, it's not just here, just too much time on the internet in general. Blessing and curse I tell ya'. FWIW, I'm the bonehead representing RI. (I assume there's only one or two of us, though *per capita* we're a very large part of the AI demographic.)
