In The Interests of Keeping Informed...

by Chris Randall

...Guidotoons is selling another boatload of shit, and there's some really nice items in there. The RMI KCII is giving me a serious case of the I Wants, even though I know it is essentially useless. Go figure. Check it here. (Note: if you're not a member of Gearslutz, not only are you a sad, sad little person, but you won't be able to look at that. So you might want to remedy that situation.)

i remember being on a session in the late 80s where some guy had a rmi keyboard computer. he had a bunch of the factory preset punch cards, and some generic IBM cards too, that he used to jam in there to see what sounds he'd get out of it. i remember it sounding like a cheesy transistor organ, but judging from the sound clips on this page, you can actually make it sound pretty decent, as well:

i had no idea you could get it to do those bell-like sounds. interesting.

of course you'd have to live with the stigma of people thinking you won one because you are a rabid j-m jarre fan, but that's the way it goes.

I always think of Roger Powell when I see a RCII. He must of toured his for 7-8 years using the same organ sound awash in EH flanger.

I can't see how its worth $1,500 though.

There's NFW anyone would confuse me with someone that finds JMJ even remotely interesting.

Laser harp, my hairy white ass.

RMI was an interesting company. The Rocksichord & Electra-Piano's are of course classics. Then the govt. offerred parent co. Allen Organ all this crazy tech other organ companies had declined and voila KC, KCII and that insane additive synth "Harmonic Synthesizer" which is really the one to get but seems to be worth about $4k. Digital synths with presets YEARS (maybe nearly a decade) before Yamaha, even before preset analog machines like the P5. They also made a frickin' calliope pumping oscillators thru real pipes, if I recall.

Even the pianos were overengineered with smooth Allen organ keyboard actions and separate tone generators for each note. Finally found one locally last week for less than the cost of shipping one off eBay.
