Hard-Core Gear Porn Wednesday...

by Chris Randall

Yes, yes it is. With a convenient hint in the previous thread, we visit the studio of one Robert "Acid" Babicz. He has nice kit. See it here. He has a Calrec Chilton (some question of lineage...) mini console. How fun is that?

Chilton consoles are (were, rather) made by Calrec, to the best of my knowledge. Everyone I know that has come in contact with one takes pains to point it out (in the way of "well, it _says_ Chilton, but it's _really_ a Calrec" sort of manner) so I just assumed it was true. I'll attempt to back that up with printed fact.

Okay, other than the fact that they're both British and both in the same business of making broadcast consoles at the same time, I can't prove for a fact that Chilton consoles were made by Calrec. I even went so far as to read the service manual for the QM3, and nowhere does the word "Calrec" appear. On the face of it, it appears that anyone that says Chilton consoles are made by Calrec is in grave danger of disseminating bullshit.

(And that's a lot of people, because Chilton = Calrec has appeared on my radar about as often as the phrase "Ward Beck is the Canadian Neve." Never mind the fact that that is just about the stupidest statement about a pro audio product that someone could come up with...)

I'd be happy to be wrong there, because up until about 8 minutes ago, I was one of those people. About the Calrec thing, not the Ward Beck thing.

Never had the opportunity to get my hands on one of the Chilton boards, but even broken and utterly demolished units are making big bucks over here (ebay in Europe that is)

And as it looks I was wrong as well ... it's a Chilton QM-3

A quick video of his studio in operation. A really interesting mix of new and old, common and rare.

This guy has been on fire the past twelve months - some of the best forward thinking tech-house out there. For reference, seek out his remix of Evil Hinko's "Gedankenhochsprung".
