Ne? Music Open Thread...

by Chris Randall

'Tis that time of the month again. Since it's hard to keep abreast of the happenings in electronic music, what's your current favorite? (Link please, if you've got one.) And no fucking trance.

On a side note, during the NBA playoffs I keep seeing this Marines commercial (apologies to our non-US readers) and the music is really not bad, a far cry from the normal "Band Of Brothers" airs they normally use. Here 'tis. Anyone know who composed the music for this? Probably a house job, but I'm curious.

Ratatat has been my new favorite for about a year now. I guess it's best described as indietronica, but don't take that against them.

Since I'm Canadian, if you haven't checked it out yet, go for MSTRKRFT's - The Looks. It's got your favourite mks-80 all over it in, wrapped up in a Neve sandwhich with a side order of ass whooping. Disco Punk at it's finest.

Second vote for The Cinematic Orchestra's - Ma Fleur and anything by Tycho (i'm biased he and I are both graphic designers).

Also, Robert Babicz - A Cheerful Temper. Coming out this month I think? He can outproduce anyone with his world war II era german broadcasting gear.. or whatever. His sorry ass looking half broken tb303 will kill you if you look at it funny, and you'll pay for the privilege.

P.S. I want his console.

the new EL-P and Grinderman discs are the only real stand outs for me, both excellent!

I've gotta say the Grinderman album is my most-played for the last couple weeks, as well. Some really nice minimalist production on that record.

Apparat's latest album, "Walls" is just ridiculously good. Amazing blend of violins, beats, glitch, vocals.. you name it. Can't get enough.

My current favorite electronic musician is Chris Clark (Warp Records). His style is amazing.
