The Broadband Revolution is upon us! (Now, where's my damned jet-pack...)

by Chris Randall

What I want to make is an MOV that instant starts, like this one from the fine folks at AudioEase. What I keep ending up with is this, which obviously downloads a fair-sized chunk of the MOV before it starts. WTF with that? Someone hook a brother up with settings and such.

That said, if you watch my movie (and not the Altiverb one) you'll get a not-insignificant preview of the nearly Fully Operational Battle Station that is Dr. Device. Questions and comments welcome.

EDIT: Well, I'm a little closer to the mark. I still can't get the little fucker to autoplay, but I've managed to make it a hell of a lot smaller, and that's something, anyways. Here 'tis. Note that it's gonna download entirely before it plays, about 8 megs worth, so there's a bit of a pause. I've done everything that should be done that I can tell.

There's an option buried somewhere in the QT encoder options that is called "Internet Fast Start" (from memory, it's something like that). Oddly it's not on by default.

Also you need to ensure the .Mov is flattened, which you can do with QT Pro with a "save as"

What are you using to compress the file? That can have an effect..

I've compressed hundreds of QT files and every now and again I still get caught out by both of these things on a regular basis..

All of this is from memory as my laptop hasn't got QT Pro on it.

ps... Flatten = "Make Movie Self-Contained" option in the "Save As" dialog.

An apple doc about prepping for Internet.. Pretty much covers it..

Your entire player is loaded using an external javascript reference to the object html code. Just use the object tags (and associated html) directly. Since it has the the 'autoplay' param (value=true) it should work fine.

WOW!!!

That looks like a tweakers paradise (NOT the Oregon version either)

If I don't load the player with an external javascript, it won't play in IE without whacking the spacebar or some other stupid bullshit made necessary by skript kiddyz. So that's not it.

I'm gonna try a new one here in a bit.

in qt pro its 'prepare for internet streaming' and select 'fast start' when exporting. check on of these:

do they load the way you want yours to? they are set for fast start, but if they still preload in explorer then i don't know what the problem could be.

your file size is fine, but you might be better off shrinking the image size and upping the audio quality...i can hear some funny stuff with the audio and i can't tell if its compression artifacts or the sound of the plug.

Wow, you two have really been getting nerdy, clearly a lot of elbow grease burning in Oregon. Functionality (really creative) and layout seem great, the visual aesthetic leaves me cold, purely subjective. How about an alternate (2D) skin, let people vote on it? Not a chance in hell, right? ;-)

Not even that much of a chance.
