I don't generally make music recommendations on this site, unless I'm asking you to support it by buying a Positron release (which, you'll note, I rarely do.) The reasoning here is that music is a subjective thing, and something that I like will doubtless not be interesting at all to the majority of you. (Obvious ringers being things that you should listen to despite any matters of taste, like Otis Redding, Yo-Yo Ma, Nina Simone, that sort of thing...)

However, I'm gonna break that rule this once. Someone on my CR.net site mentioned in the newsgroup this YouTube video of British soul/jazz/something singer Alice Russell covering White Stripes' 7 Nation Army. I was like "WTF?" when I saw it, and hit up iTunes for her album called "My Favorite Letters." Apparently, it's her second, but I can't find a first.

In any event, it's a hell of a record, with some really crafty production by tm Juke. Leans to modern indie R&B, with some jazz/hip hop/something elements. The label website is so useless I won't even bother linking to it (why is it that indie labels usually have such shit sites?) but you can grab/preview the album through your favorite download service.

I second that, and at the risk of rambling some fanboy nonsense, I really have nothing bad to say about anything on the Tru Thoughts label, especially Quantic Soul Orchestra.

Yeah, i was about to say.. she sings with the Quantic Soul Orchestra, which is the shit eight times over. Quantic's solo albums are also wiggety whack.

a quick search on amazon found:

"Under the Munka Moon" - her first album

"My Favourite Letters" - second album

"Under the Munka Moon, Vol. 2" - her third album, covers and remixes like her first

I had the pleasure of doing the live sound for Quantic Soul Orchestra here in Perth, Australia last year and for Alice and her band last week.

Ditto for all the above comments.
She's an amazing singer and a very charismatic performer. She's also very funny and willing to take the piss out of herself and bandmates.
If you get the chance to see her or QSO live, you won't be disappointed. She's incredible
