Famicon fuckin' wrawks!

by Chris Randall

Cheer up, emo kid. There's hope! Just take a longing gaze at that picture above, and realize that no matter what a dork you are, there's someone out there dorkier. As in, dorky enough to create a Famicon-shaped guitar, and do a really nice job of it. Whether the Famicon console beats Ikea tabletops for figuring and tone is open to conversation, but there's no inherent tone that can make it through a Line 6 Pod anyways, so it's really academic at this point. Go forth and ponder.

I can only read part of the text - Downpressor, can you enlighten us with a proper insight into the mind of this monstrosity's creator?

I just want to air one of my pet peeves about music sites (not AI in this case, because AI was just posting a link to someone elses site)...

But if you are going to go through the trouble of creating a web page about a music project you are doing... going through the process of step by step photographs, or dramatic photographs with wierd lighting, or whatever, can you please post an MP3?

It seems like maybe half the site I go to about some project (circuit bent device, homemade synth, free software plugin, etc.), doesn't include any sounds. I just don't know why people would go through all the trouble to document their project in meticulous detail, and yet completly ignore sound.

I mean, I can totally understand if people never bothered to share their device at all... either they don't have the time to document the thing, or don't really care enough to make the effort, or feel people wouldn't really be that interested. But one you are actually putting in so much work to share something with the public, why would you not add a small sound clip? It is like making cupcakes totally from scratch, but not adding the frosting!

OK, I'm outing myself as a dork, but I think this is *way* cooler than the IKEA guitar.

...yeah I guess I'm out-ed too 'cause if I could work out where to put the Gk-2 I'd have one...I think its the primary colour scheme that gets me, pity the Atari 520-ST never came in colour...

I'm not sure how much detail you want cause there's a lot of shit on his website and I don't have time to read all of it.

Basically he does a lot of 3d rendering, including renders of guitars before he makes them. He makes a lot of guitars, in both normal and bizarre shapes.

He has a link to this anti-JASRAC video (Jasrac appears to the Japanese equivalent of ascap or BMI, with maybe a little RIAA rolled in. According to the video, it is very bad, gouging anyone who plays music anywhere, but then not giving any of that money to the artists.)

link [www.youtube.com]">link [www.youtube.com]

which he feels compelled to point out is sarcastic. (in my experience, the Japanese tend to have a very limited grasp of irony, so that disclaimer might be necessary, for all I know) He goes on to say that he is involved in working against JASRAC.

There is also some discussion of wanting to know how to get certain textures in a 3d render. etc. etc.

space_monkey summed it up good.

JASRAC is the RIAA & ASCAP/BMI rolled into one. Up to now they have had a monpoly here, but this year or next the gubbmint is opening up that market. Copyright and rights management in generall here is a complete cluster f*ck. No clear system for rights clearances, everything has to be negotiated with multiple parties.

Indies pretty much never get paid. Most performers are on salary through management companies, they dont get paid much. Most musicians are contracted to record labels as salaried workers. No residuals there at all. Management companies are almost all mafia related. One of the biggest management agencies for boy band pop is run by a known paedophile. It goes downhill from there.

That's interesting about JASRAC. I had a conversation with the Chicago head of ASCAP about them, because I was curious as to why Real World (which is a popular show on Japan MTV) was so spotty in its payments on my foreign statements, while every other country paid off Real World like clockwork. He told me, in a nutshell, that they were quite corrupt, and ASCAP was always going at them tooth and nail to get them to pay if the act was anybody but, e.g., Dream Theater or some shit.

He mentioned that it was somewhat ironic, as it was generally easy to deal with the Japanese music industry otherwise.

Oh yeah, part of their stated mission is to collect and distribute royalties for overseas artists. As you stated, they are not know for doing this. Also Japanese TV almost never pays for use of overseas media even though they use very recognizable samples as backgrounders almost all the time.
