Shine on, you crazy diamond...

by Chris Randall

Syd Barrett passed away. (Thanks to Ben Goldacre for the link to the video, which came several days ago, but takes on a special irony today.)

I feel like a wuss but when I got into my office at work today and read this I actualy wept in front of my fellow colleagues. Syd was a very important part of my learning to love music for it's artistic impression over technical ability.

He will be greatly missed just as he has been since the late 60's

I'll be totally honest with you all: I don't particularly care for the Barrett-era Floyd stuff. But the way I look at it is thus: if it weren't for Syd, we wouldn't have any Pink Floyd at all, and we certainly wouldn't have "Wish You Were Here."

For what it's worth, I cried when Frank Sinatra died. We all have our moments.

You have no idea how shocked I was when I saw the damn headline. I won't cry though, I'll be playing his songs for the rest of the day. He's gone but his influence will remain. Shine On, Syd...

Do you think that if Frank Sinatra and Syd Barrett had done a duet that the world would have come to an abrupt, unsettling end?

R.I.P. Syd

btw...you all know that "My Way" was actually written by the frenchmen Claude Fran?ois and Jacques Revaux, and is titled "Comme d'habitude", right? Most Americans don't.

Most Americans aren't me. Fuckin' Charles Trenet slays on that jam, straight up. (I first got turned on to Trenet via the Sheltering Sky soundtrack, FWIW.)

In any case, the world didn't come to a shuddering stop when he released Duets, dumbing down his catalog for Gloria Estefan, Kenny G, and (gasp, choke) Bono. Ye gods, what a terrible album. Syd Barrett would have only improved it. They should have done "My Boy Bill" or some other Sinatra deep cut. Of course, Phil "would you like that with extra sheen" Ramone would have ruined it with his annoyingly smooth production. "Get out the belt sander! There's still some life left in this track! Get that Bossendorfer grand out of here and bring me a DX7!"
