Soft-Core Gear Porn Tuesday...

by Chris Randall

Our good friend Jeff Laity sent me some pictures of his new DIY Composer Station, in order to inspire jealousy, no doubt. There are more here. It's a pretty nice affair, although I have to take issue with his LCDs not matching. That's just not acceptable!

although i don't qite understand why anyone would buy/need one nowadays. Those newish Tascam digimixers have some serious sex appeal, especially with that meter bridge, dag!

damn, my lcd's are similarly mismatched, THAT must be why my mixes sound like ass!

i'd give this setup negative points for having the mixer completely off to the side, but i guess it's a midi composing rig, so i'll be charitable.

they are not mismatched:

" Monitor level control is from the Central Station at the top of the rack, and the two screens and trackballs are for the Mac and Giga PC. "

pretty one for mac, ugly for pc?

details, details

Let's see, if he could just start a blog y'all could bury me even further in this studio comparison series. ;)

I know. I built my desk, then this and one other pop up that are far better, with a "hey, you building that desk made me want to build a desk. Of course, mine doesn't suck like yours, but here's a nice picture!"

I'm going to curl up with my little rack and write a song about how bad I am at cabinetry.

Wow, I rated a SCGP post. Thanks for the props. The PC monitor is ugly, but it was free (permanent loan). I'm thinking about replacing it with a 23" Cinema, but then they won't match and I still won't be cool.

The DM-3200 is a 24x24 audio interface, control surface, two TC reverbs, and more. It's a recent addition, I want to see how it fits into my composing style. I actually did a lot of work on the Wedge, including the presets. It's always nice to find a fan, those are unknown gems.

I want to hear Chris' cabinetry song.

Hey now! I liked your desk... you're the one that said yours sucked. Anyway, mine was inspired by John Scrip of Massive Mastering and his old frankendesk. Maybe I do need to make a blog all about it, and that way you can stumble upon it and make fun of the fact that it has space for twice as much kit as I actually have.

Send me your gear list and room size and I'll do a custom job for $2000. It'll be tough to ship, though.
