Hard-Core Gear Porn Friday!!!

by Chris Randall

Okay, refresh monkeys. Your fix is here. I'm on a roll with the synth-centric HCGP entries. Whack the picture above for the full-size view of the private studio of a certain Mr. Rich. I have no more information than that. I don't know where this studio is, or the actual name of the person that owns it. He's a moderator on the Vintage Synth Explorer forums, and he posted a dozen or so images of his studio in this thread.

He has all the heavies: a DX1, an Obie 8-voice, PPG 2.3, Hartman Neuron. In short, these pictures are going to make you insanely jealous. The ubiquitous clear Gleeman Pentaphonic (only like, um, 2300 made, from the frequency of occurance), but the biggest deal for me is that this is the first studio we've featured that, to my knowledge, has all three of the Holy Trinity. If you examine the photos, yes, Virginia, you'll see a Prophet 5, a Memorymoog, and a Jupiter 8. (Plus a bonus Holy keyboard, a Matrix 12!) There's no single clear shot of the whole room(s) so it's hard to tell what's going on. But suffice to say, this would be a fun place to hang out.

I wonder how hot it gets in that room.

Love how he has the Pro 5 leaning against the moog/roland synths- eh, it's just a P5. So far, my favorite gear porn studio yet. Very impressive.

And another link including shots from his outboard link [www.vintagesynth.or...]">link [www.vintagesynth.or...] (gotta scroll down a bit...)

I'd give up half of the damn studio and get a decent console if I was in his shoes...

If you notice, the last picture in the rack photo series, with the 480L remote, shows the lower left hand bucket of an SSL E frame. I think he's doing okay, console-wise.

Why on earth would he mix on a Ghost then?!

Maybe that's his "writing room," ala Peter Gabriel. Only PG had a Sony Oxford in his room. Maybe he got an SSL in there, now that he owns the company.

Mr.Rich ... that's prolly Richard D. James' studio.

But what do I know...

If I were to guess, Richard D James studio would be more of a mess, more modified and home built stuff, and more like a bedroom from what I have read. But maybe he's changed over the years.
