500-series module porn...

by Chris Randall

Well, Messe is right around the corner, and we've got whatever the Roland Red thing is, and the new Moog, and the Focusrite Liquid Mix, and I'm sure many other nice things that We Can't Live Without. However, whenever these big shows come about, I'm left with the nagging feeling that there are plenty of really nice things already here that I don't have.

Case in point: this thread on Gearslutz is where our friend Adam Jay posted images of his 500-series rack of mic pres. That is one sexy slice of input, right there. Four OSA pres, four Pacifica pres (in 3 different flavors, natch), a Purple Biz, a Shadow Hills Gamma, and an API 512. That's seven distinctly different flavors of high-end mic pre in a 3U rack. Of course, Adam no doubt spent a healthy chunk of change on this rack, but he'll be able to take it to his grave, knowing that no matter where he goes or what he has to record, he's pretty much set. (Personally, I'd swap out two of the OSA pres with Averils, but that's just me.)

It's gear like this that makes it worth getting up in the morning, and I'm insanely jealous. Visit the thread for more pics.

just to clarify for everyone.

the 4 OSA pre's are of 3 different flavors.
making the entire rack NINE flavors, rather than seven. ;-)

the OSA's are only differentiated visually by the knob colors, which are admittedly difficult to see in that picture. (easier to see in another pic on the gearslutz thread)

they are from left to right..

black/black = MP1-L3
black/white = MP1-L
green/white = MP1-C
green/white = MP1-C

something i mentioned to Chris was that i was about to go with the Averills but i liked the OSA MP1-C's more.
They were considerably different in terms of highs than the API (where as the Averill was nearly dead on), but kept those API mids in tact.

Well, I don't want that rack any more. OSAs better than Averils. The nerve of some people.

;-)

In all seriousness, as I mentioned, something like this is a huge investment in money, but it will literally set someone for life. You don't really get higher quality mic pres than these, realistically, and that rack has 9 distinctly different flavors (or 11, if you count the Gamma as 3) so pretty much any eventuality is covered.
