Cheap-ass (yet inexplicably really good) Mic Pre...

by Chris Randall

I just came across this bad boy. I don't know how on earth I missed it, seeing how I continually browse every possibly pro-audio DIY site. Anyways, what we have here is a pretty nifty combo. 925 Audio sells a kit to turn a line amp from a Quad Eight console in to a mic pre. (Sound whack? What the hell you think a 1272 is, anyways? Same thing.) For $199, they'll sell you everything you need to turn a Quad Eight 127, 127a, or 137 line amp card in to a rack-mounted mic pre. What's that? You don't happen to have a ready supply of Quad Eight 127 line amps? No problem. For another hundred bucks they'll throw one in.

See, it's like this. Circa 1998 or so, you could buy a Neve 1272 cartridge for like 35 cents. They were everywhere. Every pro audio shop on the planet had 90 of them. Then all the sudden, someone had the whiz-bang idea that, where the amp part was concerned, the 1272 was more or less exactly the same as more desirable Neve gear. Now, you'll be lucky (damned lucky) to find a 1272 cart that _hasn't_ been turned in to a mic pre, and if you do, you can expect to pay $750 or more for it, never you mind the cost of turning it in to a mic pre and racking it.

So, you were all pissed off that you didn't get in on the ground floor with this whole Neve 1272 thing. Well, now's your chance. You can have a genuine Quad Eight mic pre for $300 and a little time with a soldering iron. 925 will even sell you a rack to put 'em in.

I was looking at this site a few months ago after Tape Op did a huge article about Quad Eight and its sister/parent companies like Electrodyne.

The only down side I eventually came across with building one of these is that they don't come with a power supply. Orphan Audio will sell a power supply that can juice up to 10 mic pres or EQs, but they cost $300. That's still cheaper than a lot of mic pres out there -- and it's a great deal if you are working in bulk -- but I think I'm going to hold out for some of the Seventh Circle stuff that you posted about a while back: (link [www.seventhcircos.co...]">link [www.seventhcircos.co...])
