Hard-Core Gear Porn Friday!!!

by Chris Randall

This week, no funny business. What we have here is Rusty Insects Studio, owned by James "Carbon111" from the Analog Heaven mailing list. When I put up a studio and make fun of it, and you all go "yeah, but what the fuck is it _supposed_ to look like?" this is what I'm talking about. A good selection of digitals and analogs, some tasteful outboard, and not a piece of Mackie or Behringer in site.

Of course, James obviously has some cash to spend, as witnessed by the three Serge panels, but still...

Here's his workstation, which isn't visible in the above photo. In short, it's an excellent small workstation, properly laid out, with some good quality yet not too ridiculously expensive gear. Visit his page for info on all his stuff. He also resource pages for the Evolver, Serge, Microwave, and Juno 60, chock full of usefull shit if you have one of those pieces.

Great studio! But what the hell... This is a prime example of how expensive gear doesn't equal great music. It's sad. I wish this guy would spend more time listening to and studying music, than buying gear. "But it's all for the fun of music creation!!!"- With that much gear and that level of music, it seems the fun is more in the acquiring of hardware and possibly the illusion of acquired skill with new gear, than in any creation process.

Good luck to all.

Thanks for the nice words. I wish i had the money some seem to think I do but the studio was built up over a couple of decades - I've been a total packrat for a long time. The serge panels were purchased after selling a LOT of gear and saving up for a couple of years.

over the past year and a half, I've been downsizing the studio. I tend to be more productive with a leaner setup. When I'm finished with all the downsizing, all I will be left with is the Serge, Microwave XT, Polyevolver, Nord Modular and Motif.

As far as my music goes, *some* people seem to like it - my CDs do sell occasionally ;)
I will try to get more recent MP3s up though...
