The New Shit...

The New Shit…

We unveiled this module this morning at the Muff Wiggler / Trash_Audio synth meet in Portland, and here’s some info on Sequencer 1.

The astute among you will notice a passing similarity to the Elektron Analog Four, and if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, we’re flattering the fuck out of those guys with this little bitch. Here’s some vital statistics:

• 36HP, 20mm depth.

• 4 banks of 16 patterns, each pattern can be from 1 to 64 steps long. The entire state (all banks and patterns) can be saved to SD card as a preset, so the memory is essentially unlimited.

• Clock input can be per step (like any other sequencer’s clock), or 24ppq or 48ppq for DIN sync (via a simple 5-pin DIN -> 3.5mm adaptor). Clock output can be a staggering number of choices, which is handy if the unit is acting as the master clock. The Run input can be operated a couple different ways, as can the output. In short, it can interface to pretty much anything clockish, and can in turn drive pretty much anything in a clocklike fashion.

• Each step gets a 1v/Oct output, three CV outputs (that can each be either 0-10v, -5 to +5v, or 0 to +5v), a main gate output, and an auxiliary gate output. Gate length is programmable per step.

• The playback modes are forward, reverse, pingpong, pingpong with double end triggers, skip forward, walk, and random. This is programmable per pattern.

• There are several ratcheting features; you can program a ratchet of various lengths per step, or you’ll note the 6 buttons labeled “REP.” These will repeat, in order, the last 8, 4, 2, or 1 steps as a loop, or cause the step you hit them on to repeat in half or quarter time. (In the same manner that the MIDI triggers in Replicant work, basically, if you own that plugin.)

• As I hinted before, SD card for storage and OS updates.

There are many other deep features that I’m not able to talk about at this point. Our goal is to make the single most sophisticated sequencer available for Euro, and I think we’ve accomplished this already, let alone what we’re adding as we go along. We haven’t finalized pricing yet, or availability. We’re hoping for US$599.00, and about two months. But both those numbers are subject to change.

    well shit.

    very nice work.

    well shit indeed!

    very well thought out.

nice to meet you guys in person today :)

do i get a discount for guessing correctly when you last mentioned it here? (not serious, its hardly rocket science to guess what a module with that HP could be, esp when you don't do analog)

    So is it single channel?

& is the SD card hidden round the back somewhere?

can you get this up on Modular Grid soon? Thanks!

Audio Damage is making my resolve to not get a modular system more tenuous with each release...

Shut up and take my money.

Wow! This is not what I was expecting. Amazing work, guys.

Interesting timing on this announcement, as next month I was planning to unveil my DIY hardware MIDI sequencer kit (with much less fanfare than this, of course). This is going to be a good year for fans of hardware sequencers!

I'd be all over this but for some reason I bought 2 kids a college education instead of a much more useful modular synthesizer.

  10. Chris Randall

Well, that was stupid. You should have just given them a library card. That's what my dad did, and I turned out fine.

SD card slot is on the back. There's no need for it to be on the front, as you'll only need to get to it in the event of an OS update. It'll hold bajillions of presets.

Whoa...., Ok I'm with Huggie. I'm running out of reasons, this is what modular has been missing imo.

This is everything i've been waiting for in a Eurorack sequencer! Thank you =o]

If I had a dollar for every time I've read "I wish Elektron would make a standalone version of their sequencer" on a forum somewhere, I could probably buy Sequencer 1.

    Nice work!

not being negative on the whole- because it seems rad... but i'm not sure ergonomically jacks on the bottom would work for me. super customizable, self designed modular is kind of a new thing and obviously everyone lays stuff out their own way, i'm just thinking out loud. curious to hear about design decisions/considerations.

i mean, for me, it'd have to be in the to top row so as to no be under spaghetti mountain and the top isn't necessarily the most comfortable place to reach to - that's where i put mults and mixers, for instance. the middle is where i like more focus/interaction demanding stuff, but with less patch points - more knobs. 1 thing i appreciate about the analog4 is it lets me do cv/sequencing (of 12u and looking now i don't have any with that many jacks on the bottom, they're nearly all vertical) w/o worrying about wires in the way - otoh, it's slightly less in the moment + in the middle of things, literally / figuratively. :)

i know a lot of people like "skiffs" in front of a big case for similar ergonomic reasons though.

of course, a lot depends on the size of your modular and the type of modules you have, like, i bet it'd be a non issue if your tastes are more of the modules that are nearly synths unto themselves and less so the building block type modules (which i admit is what seems popular today) and you just wanted a powerful sequencer for them because there wouldn't be the same level of wiring madness back and forth.

  16. Chris Randall

There's no way we're going to please everybody with the jack placement. The people that want it on the top because skiff are gonna unlike this configuration. If we put 'em on the top, the people that plan to put it in a 6U or 9U are gonna be pissed. If we put them to the right or the left, people are going to complain about the resulting empty space and the unnecessary width. (It would be 42HP if we did that.)

Long story short: we're putting it the way we want it to be. If that's a deal-breaker, sorry, would have loved to have sold you one, but it is what it is. Jacks on the bottom was good enough for the Moog 960, it's good enough for us. Modular synths have cables. No way around that.

Very nice indeed. And it just so happens I'm about to be in the market for a Eurorack sequencer...

will it have a glide function?

    super excited.

First, let me say thanks to the folks who stopped by to say hello at the T_A meet. I think I can say that a good time was had by all. I had CR take a photo of me with boobs, but my attempts to tweet it with the appropriate caption were thwarted by the next-door coffee shop's slightly erratic wi-fi.

Next, thanks for your enthusiasm regarding our latest creation. Yes, it will have a glide function.

  21. D' MacKinnon

Looks great! Also, I'm sure I'm not the first to notice but the prefix for the modular units are ADM. Presumably for Audio Damage Module but it also looks like shorthand for Adam. Which is kind of nifty.

  22. Chris Randall

Just paying him back for all the years he's put up with plug-ins that have a button labeled "RAND ALL"

    -CR

  23. un.ku

Wow, RAND ALL, can't believe I never noticed that.

Gotta say that MORE cowbell in Tattoo is by far the best plugin inside joke ever, by the way.

  24. Chris Randall

Tattoo is full of little shit like that. My favorite thing ever is the several magazine reviews that mention D-Plane Synthesis, as if it was something we actually created in earnest.

When we started making Audio Units, we had to pick a four-character company identifier for them. Our VSTs already had identifiers which started with "AD", followed by two characters to identify the plug-in. I was seriously tempted to choose "ADam" for our AU ID, as in Audio Damage, of course. I chickened out and our ID is "AuDa".

    Awesome stuff guys. Up-up, down-down, left-right, left-right, B-A, B-A, Start.

"Tattoo is full of little shit like that. My favorite thing ever is the several magazine reviews that mention D-Plane Synthesis, as if it was something we actually created in earnest. "

I love that I read the manual with enough detail that I emailed about errata, but skimmed over that joke completely.
