Some Maschine Kits...

by Chris Randall

As you no doubt know if you're a regular reader of this blog, I very rarely use any pre-built drum sounds; I prefer to make my own via various synthesis and recording methods, and I do individual kits for nearly every song I write nowadays. For the last EP, most of the drum sounds are either recorded electro-acoustic sounds, or created via synthesis in Max/MSP. However, I made several synthesis-based kits on other gear that I didn't end up using. If you have a Maschine, you might find these handy. Here is a zip file containing three Maschine kits. (Zip is 3 megs and change.)

1. CR MeeBlip Drums - This, as the name implies, is a kit of drum sounds made on the MeeBlip SE.

2. CR Reactive Drums - This kit is farmed from a custom drum synthesis Reaktor patch that Adam and I made last summer.

3. CR Massive Drums - I made the sounds in this kit with Massive.

Note that all three kits are fully resampled; you don't need to have Massive or Reaktor installed or anything. You do, however, need the latest Maschine software update. Obviously, the samples are in the appropriate folders, so if you don't have a Maschine, you can still grab 'em; you'll just need to build your own kits in your weapon of choice.

Thanks for this, Chris. I downloaded. Will check the kits out when I get a chance. I'm excited to hear this stuff. Your aesthetic sense is always worthwhile.

Will donate as well. Do you have a "suggested donation" number?

I always wanna do what's "customary" at art galleries, etc. where there's a "suggested donation," but I know in the digital world people tend to just say "please donate" without a suggested figure. This always makes me cautious about donating, 'cause I don't wanna give some insulting figure. Sometimes I think --- and maybe this is me being neurotic? --- that $2 is worse than nothing in some instances. I dunno.

I dunno. I usually put in $5 when no other amount is specified, no matter what the situation. But that said, I removed the tip jar button from the post; frankly, it's just pointless for something like this, and is a bit embarrassing besides.

I'd be interested but I don't have any NI stuff, wav files would be cool...

They're in the zip, in individual folders. You'll miss out on some of the programming I did in the Maschine kits, effects, balancing, etc., but on the whole, it's all there.

Funny, $5 is also my default tip for nearly everything unless it seems inappropriate. I leave $5 tips at Waffle House for $4 meals. Sometimes it's too much, but I don't usually feel bad about it. I will sometimes only give a buck or three to something online though, if it's a small thing . It's better than nothing.

You're being neurotic. Something is rarely worse than nothing. Most people are, by far, giving nothing to anyone asking for an optional donation. You're at least saying you give a shit.

Thanks for these samples Mr. Randall. I didn't know about your drum sample creation aesthetic. That puts an interesting spin on things.

Any plans on putting the Reaktor patch out there?

We made the Reaktor patch as a proof-of-concept of several different technologies. As Reaktor Core objects are open to the world, and the Core objects we created for this patch contain Audio Damage IP that is currently being exploited, it would be incredibly unlikely that we released the patch.

Kind of sad in a way; as a drum synth it is very capable, albeit excessively CPU-heavy. But the fruits of that labor will actually drive the company's output for some time, so even though we weren't able to sell that particular idea, we will be making permutations of it for a while.

It should be noted that when we do R&D for other companies, we work strictly within the paradigms of our own business, so if the R&D doesn't pan out for the people that asked for it, it most likely will be usable by us. This is necessary, as when we do something like this, we have to devote 100% of the company resources to it, and that naturally affects our own output.

In any event, Bitcom is a direct result of that work, and our next product will be as well, most likely.

To return to the subject, I agree with bongo inasmuch as Chad is being neurotic about donating. In my experience, hardly anyone donates if they don't have to. I think that Donate button on the Free Shit page has netted me a total of about $50 in five years, for tens of thousands of downloads. Ironically, if I just put pay buttons in front of the downloads (as in "pay $5, get these 909 samples") then I'd probably have made a few thousand dollars by now. As it is, the Donate button's income gets lost in the noise. I have found more money in that time in our washer.

So yeah, even $2 is like "WOW, SOMEONE ACTUALLY DONATED!!!! HOLY SHIT!"

I note that this site's sole commercial purpose is to drive traffic to Audio Damage (I don't think I make any secret of that) and serve as a forum for the discussion of Audio Damage products. As such, it does an admirable job, despite being a very abstract idea of advertising. So it doesn't really bother me. If this paid my rent directly, I'd be fucked.

See now if I put up a "donate" button and gotten fifty bucks in five years, Wayne Brady would have to choke a bitch.

Thanks CR.

I make my drum shots all the time in Alchemy, much more gratifying. I end up always using Goldbaby samples in the end though.

Happy New Year. I hope you find newer impractical ways of making music ; )

My 14-year-old got a Maschine Mikro for xmas, and set up a paypal account on the same day. I sent him this link -- let's see what happens.

Are any Maschine owners dissatisfied? At all?
I have a Spark, love it, but sometimes the software does funny things, like lose all my data.
