8 BITS OF DOOM...

by Chris Randall

Puremagnetik has just released a new Micropak called alphaSynth. It is a heavily re-tooled and much improved version of the sample set I used to have here that I made from the alphaSyntauri. They are much, much better at that sort of thing than I, what with doing it for a living and all, and the alphaSynth set is available in several formats, including Live Rack, Kontakt, and ESX Universal.

I've made a bunch of other samples for them with various pieces of Apple ][ based kit, and you can watch out for those in the future.

And off topic... Ronin is updated to 1.6.2 and x64!!!! Should be the last AD update of old plugs to x64, no?... (aside from the freebies, that is).

Yes. We're finally done with the Shitstorm Tornado that is updating legacy products. FuzzPlus2 and PulseModulator have been pulled from the store. (Rough Rider is 64-bit already, of course.) FuzzPlus3 will be arriving imminently, as will a complete re-design of the AD store.

@javahut: Yes, it's done. Thanks for noticing. As CR said, we're abandoning FuzzPlus2 and PulseModulator, replacing the former with a new version. I imagine this will disappoint some people (hi, Steve) but we seriously need to bring the x64 Death March to a close while I still have some semblance of enthusiasm left for the plug-in business.

I love FuzzPlus and PulseModulator and they work fine for me. I suppose that there may come a day when my primary DAW goes 64-bit but that seems to be a long ways off.

And with that comment, @chaircrusher neatly illustrates why I feel little more than a vague sense of sadness about having spent so much time on the x64 updates. It wasn't interesting work and it serves the interest of a minority of our customer base. That will change over time, but right now it just seems kinda stupid.

The consolation for me too is that PulseModulator still works fine. I wouldn't be surprised if at some point when everything does go x64, someone will come up with some kind of 32-bit to 64-bit shell plugin. Considering Live hasn't even gone 64-bit, I'd guess the day that 32-bit plugins are dead is a while off.

Ten years from now though, I really am going to miss PulseModulator.

Awe, Adam... don't feel sad ;D Your time updating to x64 is greatly appreciated, probably by many more than you think. I would think a lot of users that have a more esoteric type taste in music and the plugins you make... that appeal to the more experimental side... are moving to 64 bit a lot sooner rather than later. I have been for going on over a year now, and at one point thought it was useless and I basically never would (or it would be in the distant distant future). But for me, everything really does seem more elegant, and seems to run smoother in 64 bit land. So, Adam (and Chris), the work is greatly appreciated... and you'd have to do it sooner or later anyway. It definitely makes AD appear more on top of it than those rapidly dwindling numbers of remaining developers who can't seem to get it together enough to get x64 out. Now it's behind you and over with. Congrats! And looking forward to whatever AD's abstract genius brain trust comes up with next!

@javahut - thanks for that. Yeah, I do take some satisfaction in finishing the ordeal, and in finishing it before some other companies (most of whom have far fewer products than us). Personally I plan to leave my music machine--a home-built PC running Windows XP--running a 32-bit OS for the foreseeable future. I don't use huge sample sets and "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" definitely applies to a smoothly running music computer.

@shamann - it's possible that I'd respond to bribery. :-)

Yes, x64 updates are essential and very much appreciated, rest assured. I'll be keeping an old machine around to run old plugins that'll never see the light of a 64 bit day, for when I just have to have that 'sound' or whatever, but the AD plugs are an essential part of my daily workflow so having them still remain x32 would be a pain...

I would like to state that while I don't benefit at all from all the 64 bit updates... I STILL really appreciate all the hard work that has gone into them... and mainly it is because it embodies the type of company AD is. They aren't sacrificing R&D time for new plugs that would actually bring IN money because they HAVE to. It is still a very small percentage of those that want it (Let alone "need" it)... but yet they still do it to make sure they take care of their customers.

That is just a whole new level of badass. Salutations, sirs.
