Standard Beat Company...

by Chris Randall

As you all know, our good friend Wade Alin folded his Beatserv sample company a few months ago, due to issues beyond his control with his partners and other things. Much dismay and rending of garments ensued. Well, from the ashes comes Standard Beat Company. Wade picks up right where Beatserv left off, with his first offering, Dark Downtempo 4. He has a new pricing model (cheaper sets and more of 'em, rather than big, relatively expensive packages) so DDT4 is only US$29.00.

There is also a free set to get you started, a fantastic warped acoustic house set called Penthouse that is eminently usable. Here's to success with the new endeavor!

It's a bit of an awkward process to retrieve the free Penthouse set. I had to login to Paypal and proceed as if I were making a purchase and then it tells me it's free. No big deal, just a bit weird.

And thank you for the free samples, Wade!

Yeah, I won't call the site buggy - but it needs refined. Paypal likes to make everything tricky. Waiting on approval for a merchant account ; )

I gave up on the free samples because I got a blank screen. I just bought the first pack so I could get them.

Wade, any chance you'd do a screencast on how you produce these loops? I'd pay to look over your shoulder as you make one of these.

Hey all - I'm working on resolving this silly, have to checkout with free product issue. In the meantime, Imma just put it up on dropbox and make it easy for everyone. Post a link in a bit.

Screencast - absolutely. We're also going to be filming some general "making of" videos with our next couple releases and see how that goes - the sampling process, drum miking, etc. That's actually the most exciting part of it, for me personally. I'll get those up in the next couple weeks.

Having actually watched over Wade's shoulder while he makes beats, I'll say the following: I'm a pretty fucking skilled dude when it comes to pushing samples and such-like around in a DAW to make drum beats, and I should be able to follow along, but I honestly have no fucking idea what he does. For like an hour, it's just this soup sandwich of out-of-time drum hits, and then all the sudden there's a fucking beat, and I don't know how he did it.

Dude has issues, is all I'm saying.

Ha, thanks Chris, I think ; )

It's a weird process for me, for sure. I've always had an odd sense of rhythm. At the same time - I was that guy who could keep time to anything, regardless of time signature. and I don't play drums, but I've been obsessed with the nuances of drumming techniques - ghosting, all that.

So, I'm making some headway on this free product nonsense but in the meantime, get it -

EDIT - got that all worked out, I hope ; ) link [www.standardbeany.co...]

Awesome, I look forward to the screencast/master class.

Glad you're back in the beat biz. I scored a kung fu movie that used Beatserv in a few fight scenes and they kicked ass.

A most welcome return. I'm always digging through the Beatserv crate, but was hoping there soon would be more new loops. Looking forward to those 'making ofs'.

I purchased this set just based on faith/past work. I'm a Wade fan and I like to support independent digital artisans, for lack of a better phrase.

Very happy that the general Beatserv aesthetic has taken another form. And I like the new name and general design vibe.
