Two Weeks Notice...

by Chris Randall

There are two weeks left to get your submissions in for the AI Comp. (For those just joining us, info and discussion here.) On Twitter and via email, I've received a number of questions, enough to where it might warrant posting some meta-answers here:

1. If you have more than one track you'd like to submit, that's not the end of the world. However, one of your tracks is better than the other, and you're only going to get one on the comp. Submit the better one. Since I definitely won't pick the one that isn't better if I have two to choose from, right?

2. Style isn't important. Several people have been concerned that the type of music they make won't fit. I've received everything from ambient noisescapes to electro-funk thus far. There are three tracks I've received that are almost certainly going on; all three are of hugely disparate styles. I will say that if your overriding descriptor is a genre tag, then you're going about it wrong. Just make a good tune. Don't worry if it fits in someone else's idea of what might get played on a particular club night, or that it might not fit the "synth crickets" (to quote Jeff Laity) genre that I myself work in.

3. I've also seen many comments that boil down to "I'd submit if I wasn't a total greenhorn nubsauce." You know what? I want to hear new shit. So does everyone else. If you're a total greenhorn nubsauce, that means everything you do is new by definition. The worst I can say is "no," right? If you're afraid of hearing that word, then making music might not be such a good idea. Nothin' to it but to do it. Or in the words of my good friend Martin Atkins, "GET THE FUCK OUT OF BED."

Anyhow, keep 'em coming. This is your two-weeks notice!

Maybe I'll write a Rush-flavored track in honor of Rush Day (2/1/12).

It's worth noting that you also have to get past my taste filters, and anything "Rush flavored" (or Tom Petty or Neil Young or fucking Skynard or KISS, or any other bullshit like that) simply won't manage that feat.

I fucking _hate_ that shit. Like, I wouldn't even think it was funny.

The good news is that Rush is Canadian, so Rush Day was on Jan. 2 and has already passed.

What does that leave? Why, the answer is obvious: Ted Nugent

I've no doubt that anything featuring Ted Nugent is safely included in "any other bullshit like that."

No way, CR loves Nugent.

In all seriousness, I've never understood the appeal of Rush unless you happen to play drums.

Welp, so much for all the work I put into this Christian drill n' krunkstep cover of Sweet Home Alabama.

Right-click, delete.

@CR: You will definitely get a submission from me close to the deadline. I like to tweak, tinker, and experiment endlessly so it will be a while before I'm done.

I'm surprised at the anti-Neil Young sentiment, given the pro-Tom Waits sentiment, but I suppose that's all OT.
