A Little Improv...

by Chris Randall

As much as I was tempted to bust out in to high-speed Tyner-esque runs (a fellow lefty, and that's how we do) I managed to hold myself back. Since there will be an inevitable question, I'll go ahead and say now that the CP-80B is running through the TimeFactor and Space, and the Space is set to its Shimmer algorithm. These are the only effects on the piano. (I'm using Ableton Live as a mixer in this context, and Eos and Dr. Device are the sends, but neither of them are on the piano.)

Anyhow, sequenced by Phaedra, as is proper for music like this.

@DBM: The songs it is well known from in the late 70s and early 80s all had every knob dimed, it seems, so that brash middy pseudo-piano is kind of what people think a CP70 or CP80 sounds like. But it has a pretty broad range of tone colors, never mind the fact that it really loves pedals.

I've already bought a few of your plugins and started a Euro system as a result of your videos. I really don't have room for a CP80 in my apartment. PLEASE STOP!

I'm a sucker for CP-pianos and tape delay, so I'm all over this stuff. Very nice, Chris!

Very nice! Kinda Vangelis (in the good way, not the bad way, so don't take offense). I have always wanted a CP80. It's one of my white whale bits of kit. I do have an ultra rare Rhodes Mk V that I got for an absolute song that I use for things like this. But I do so still have my heart set on a CP80! I haven't got Phaedra yet (mainly because the iPad in the house belongs to the wife), but I'm really digging the design. I can see how it would fit into my workflow very easily. My music partner is leaning on me to get an iO dock and to do more with the iPad stuff. This video is not going to get him off of my back!

Always loved the CP, with a good modulated reverb it has this dreamy quality (especially in the tails) I haven't heard from any other EP. This clip has me wanting one again... not a good thing around year end time :)

How anyone could not want a CP after watching this is utterly beyond me.

i thoroughly enjoyed this piece. every tasteful, hypnotic, selective bit of it. when i finally got my cp70 up my 3 flights of stairs, i knew i wasn't moving for awhile. so worth it to have at least one instrument one can just sit at and play. and thanks for the hall & oates. there goes my afternoon. it's now officially a cp-monday! simple minds or gabriel up next...
