The Big Sale, Round 1...

by Chris Randall

I'm clearing out stuff I don't need / use / appreciate in preparation for a new series of projects. Most of it isn't synth related, and thus won't get posted here. However, there are two items might be of interest to AI readers:

1. Eventide H8000FW. I know, I know. I just don't use it enough to warrant owning it. It deserves to be in a home where someone will appreciate it. US$3000. I bought it straight from Eventide, and it has never met cigarette smoke or a stage. It has a little rack rash in the usual spots, and the LCD screen has a little tiny blotch in the upper right hand corner. This doesn't affect the unit in the slightest (which is why I haven't bothered replacing it) but Eventide will send you a new one for freebies if you're the sort that gets sent around the bend by this kind of thing.

2. BurnSmart 1-to-7 tower CD/DVD duplicator. This is the model that immediately precedes the current 1-to-7 they sell. It is not the E-SATA version, but rather the IDE one. We only used it a couple times. One side has a little scrape from shoving it in next to another computer, but otherwise it is as new. It has an internal HD to store up to 20 disk images, so if you're a label or whatever, you can just put in an image, then burn at will. I'm thinking $200 for this, but if you can make a reasonable case for your need, I can consider offers. Ditto on the shipping, and this fucker is on the heavy side. Imagine a normal tower PC with 8 optical drives in it, and you'll have a good idea of what it weighs and how annoying it will be to ship.

Drop me a line if you're interested in either of these things. If they're still here, they're still available.

So with that $3k in the bank, does that mean a PC3K will soon be on the way? Man, can't believe you are selling the H8000FW...

I just don't use it for anything but simple delays and shit any more. It has a real particular sound, and my head isn't in that space currently. I will no doubt regret it immensely, but it's how I do. I don't let myself get complacent with my gear, else I end up making the same shit every day.

I'm thinking a Kyma system might be in my future, actually.

What is the H8000 sound, if you don't mind taking about 90 seconds to describe it? Never bought one of the beasties.

Well, it sounds a little like _this_ and a bunch like _that_ and oftentimes it will sound like _that other thing_.

Honestly, are you asking for a subjective opinion of something like this? It sounds like an H8000, which is just like an H7500 only twice, or just like a DSP4500 except considerably moreso. It sounds like an Eventide multi-FX.

H8000 is a beast. it sounds great. soooo many presets and sooo many ways to edit things and make them your own. but it is a big deal. it is hard to ignore. it's not just that it's expensive.. it's that it is sort of like having 500 really awesome plug ins sitting in a box and they're totally customizable and offer unparalleled routing and direct connection to your computer...

and, if you are so inclined and don't mind getting your hands dirty and spending a good chunk of time doing so, you can roll your own algorithms using Vsig. it isn't easy.. it isn't straight forward.. it's got its idiosyncrasies but Vsig is there if you want it.

it's a girlfriend that wants a lot of attention.. hard to ignore.. but if you do give her the attention she needs she do all those things to you that you dreamed about when you were 14.

Kyma is kind of similar only it's a girlfriend who shows up at your place at midnight and her dress already half off and she's got 3 or 4 vodka tonics in her but she's wearing some really really complicated lingerie.

Earlier I was going to post something about how I'd often wondered how you could justify an H8000, but I figured you were doing something really special with it. I've only used the H3000/3500, and mostly only for the micro pitchshift and a couple of other things, nothing that remotely means I need to own one.

Then you wrote about the Kyma and I have to admit that I've thought many times about buying one, even though I would realistically only be able to scrape together about 1/10 of the justification I'd have for the Eventide.
