Whelp, Said The Mother Dog...

by Chris Randall

I had hoped by this time I'd be putting up a "HEY ZOMG BUY NOW!!!!111!1" post about SimpleMidiPad, because in my experience (which, in this particular subject area, is not vast, but exists), when an app goes in review, a few hours later it's good to go. SimpleMidiPad went in to review, all right. On Monday morning.

And there it sits. The days of the dreaded Apple Pocket Veto via "In Review" Limbo are long gone, so I can only surmise that the wait is due to the fact that they pushed an iOS update out today. So I don't have that to talk about, and I don't want to leave the Pd post at the top, because it is just sending ripples of bad vibes... uh... rippling, I guess, through the coffee shops of San Jose and Cambridge, and the more fashionable Scandinavian cities.

So, I guess we'll have to Open Thread this shit. You start. What's on your mind? Could it be this post Tom Ellard just put up?

Think I should buy a used iPad? The iPad 2 looks like one of Apple's incremental updates (more like an iPad 1s), so I'm really thinking maybe picking up an original is a good idea. Reasons to get one: 1) checking email & reading in bed, 2) occasional Monopoly game, 3) audio apps like this. Reasons against: I don't need it.

Computer Controlled
I just got an iPad and am looking to get it MIDI'd up and controlling my synths and Ableton. Not sure what the best way to go about this is.

Its a bit distressing that Tom Ellard would think vinyl sucks. Is he a fan of the loudness wars? Will we see some Severed Heads remixes of deadmau5? Is he a fan? Tune in at 11 to find out...

Any plans on doing any android apps? i had my brief tango with the iphone, and have no interest in getting an ipad due to my dislike of iOS. I love the concept of the product i have been longing for a touch based control surface for effects that doesn't cost a whole lot. Well just wondering. Also THANK YOU FOR PHOSPHOR AND EOS, two products i use often.

No, I don't have any Android plans whatsoever. I don't own any Android devices, nor do I plan on buying any in the foreseeable future.

@Chris Randall

Since this is an open thread and you've had your MeeBlip for almost two months now, how are you digging it?

What are you loving about it? Hating about it? That sorta stuff.

@funkybot I now do nearly all my web browsing comfortably on the couch or in bed w/ my iPad, as well as play with the various music apps at times. Overall it is not life changing but a very nice to have. I agree the iPad 2 is a very modest update but the extra CPU power might be useful in the future.

@inteliko Thx for the Nerve iPad tip...definitely will be playing with that this weekend!

"Now, the idea that by streaming audio over the incredibly low bandwidth of YouTube Flash format you were demonstrating the quality of analogue audio is so UTTERLY FUCKING STUPID that I regret my membership of the human race."

I love it when people say things like this but as for his other bit of vinyl rant... there is many a record i prefer to the same songs on CD. we all have our opinions. i have heard a track or two (or ten) that sound better coming off the vinyl than off the CD for whatever reason.

anyway - ipads/iphones etc.. i'm outta the loop.

beauty pill
Quoting the Tom Ellard post: "You are old and fat and so are the Bangles."

This is the first Google image that came up for Tom Ellard, whom I did not know before reading this rant.

Side point, but one of many that irked me about that post.

People who post the kind of youtube videos he's talking about are just fans. They're not idiots. They're just goofy FANS, Tom.

And yes, sometimes fans misunderstand the artist or the process/intention (creative or technical) behind what we do. But dissing your fans when they're mistaken is not cool. It's just not.

It's like the rule you learn on tour: If someone comes up to you, eyes all aglow, saying "Great show!" you do not say "Really? I thought it sucked."

In that moment, YOU are the clueless one. The one who forgot how art works. You forgot it's not up to you. You don't get to tell the fan what just happened. The show is over now. It's up to them.

It is a bad move artistically. It is a bad move socially. Dissing the fan is just not cool. Don't be an asshole. Just... sssssshhhhh. Don't.

With regards to his characterizations of 16-bit digital versus vinyl, I master records for a living. I know a little bit about this topic. But to go into it any further would take us down the same unpleasant, nerdy rabbit hole as the Pd-vs.-Max discussion.

And nobody wants that. Nobody.
